Making Your Own Dairy-free Chocolates EVEN Without Your Own Melting Pot

There are many on-line resources you can find Easter treats such as Divvies and the Peanut Free Planet.

However, after ordering them myself and reading many of the package ingredients, I realized I could make my own.  Why not save some money on shipping and handling and make as many as I wanted!

If you have little bit of time and a few necessary items, you will be set to go for any holiday.
Soy butter/chocolate hearts

What I use:
  • Chocolate mold(s) - you can find them at any craft store
  • A bag of dairyfree chocolates - we use Enjoy Life chocolate chips (free of top 8 allergens)
  • Microwavable Make N Mold squeeze bottle (available at craft stores)

Homemade chocolates
1 12 oz. bag (2 cups) of dairy-free chocolate chips
1 T dairy-free (soy-free) shortening or margarine
1 pre-purchased chocolate mold
*Find a mold with a variety of choices or one you can dip pretzel rods into
1 parchment bag OR disposable decorating bag OR Make N Mold squeeze bottle
1 package of mini foil wrappers (to wrap individual chocolates) or larger wrappers (for pretzels)
1 package of pretzel rods (if making pretzel rod chocolates)

Preparation
1. In a small saucepan, bring several cups of water to a boil.
2. Combine the chocolate and the shortening in a small heatproof bowl and set over the boiling water (don't let the bowl touch the water). Stirring occasionally, heat until the chocolate melts completely.
3. Use parchment/decorating bag/squeeze bottle to pour chocolate into mold(s).
4. Once chocolate is in the molds, tap the mold so it settles more evenly.
5. Using pretzels?  Lay them flat and drizzle chocolate over them.
6. Let cool in refrigerator.
7. Remove from mold.
8. Wrap individual candies.

You can make chocolate coins, sunbutter chocolates, soybutter chocolates, and even flavored chocolates like peppermint with a small drop of peppermint oil added to your melting mix.

Having everything at home makes creating last second allergy~friendly treats easy, no matter what the holiday is!
