Peanut/Tree Nut butter alternative? SunButter is awesome!!

For those of you who have yet to discover a butter which is gluten-free, peanut-free, tree-nut free, egg-free and dairy-free, I have one for you.  My family recently rediscovered and absolutely LOVES it. When my youngest was still allergic to soy he couldn't have this, but since he outgrew this allergy, he totally loves it.

SunButter Review from Smart Allergy~Friendly Education

SunButter, a subsidiary of Red Rivers Commodities, Inc.

Ingredients include: SUNFLOWER SEED, SUGAR, MONO-DIGLYCERIDES TO PREVENT SEPARATION, SALT, AND NATURAL MIXED TOCOPHEROLS TO PRESERVE FRESHNESS.

On the packaging it states:  MADE ON EQUIPMENT THAT PROCESSES SOY.

For more information, contact: http://www.sunbutter.com/ or 1-800-437-5593.

Their website is filled with reference information.  Where to buy, KIDS KORNER, a blog and much more.  Check out how to make some easy and tasty SunButter Banana Muffins.    Be sure to visit their SunButter Recipes link to get even more great cooking ideas!

Is there much of a variety?  More than I imagined.  Our current favorite it their ON-THE-GO SNACK PACK.  I came across a few packets hidden in our handy, dandy allergy~friendly cabinet.  They were from the 2nd Annual Boise Food Allergy Walk we participated in October 2011.  Yes, they were still delicious!!  My two allergy kids gobbled down 2 apiece with their apples and celery.

Looking for 5 lb containers? 'On-the-go' packets?  or even by the case? SunButter via Amazon offers you LOTS of options!~

Yes, it's a bit more expensive than peanut butter and soy butter, but OHHH, the taste is worth it!!

  1. We love sun butter! My son is allergic to peanuts. I have been meaning to try this homemade granola bar recipe, it uses sunbutter! http://heavenlyhomemakers.com/homemade-chewy-granola-bars-without-corn-syrup

  2. Wow, great post. I say that partly as a blogger for SunButter, of course, but also because it will be helpful to other food allergy families. I'm a mom, too, and I appreciate your perspective. Thanks for a wonderful post on your great blog! Enjoying following you.

  3. Thanks to you both. Someone else was just asking me about a corn syrup free granola bar. Will be passing along this link and trying it out myself. Think agave nectar could be replaced for the honey? I'm thinking it could.

  4. I am so new to this...we are trying to determine my infant's allergies and I'm breastfeeding, so to the allergy free diet, I go! Anyway, I saw the sunbutter yesterday and almost bought it, but I am supposed to stay away from soy too and saw that it is processed in a plant that uses soy. What is your experience with making this sort of decision? Do you know of any sunbutter that is not processed in a plant like this?

  5. I would call the company and ask more questions about the equipment used to process the soybutter. Most companies will state on their packaging if they process any other type of allergen products just to cover themselves legally. Their products may be processed in completely different part of a plant. The soy and nut products may not even be near one another. Here is a link to another company that sells sunflower butter. I haven't used them, but would also follow up with their manufacturing practices. Let me know! https://shop.onceagainnutbutter.com/contactus.sc

  6. Hi Joz1234 and foodallergymom too,
Good question. What a lucky little baby to have you so conscientiously managing your diet!

About the soy statement in SunButter. Here's the details: The only step of our processing that shares equipment with soy is the roasting step. This is the very first step of our process. The sunflower seed used to make sunflower is never roasted together with soy and
there is a thorough cleanout process in between roasting soy and sunflower. The cleanout involves pressure washing with 180 degree water. Therefore the likeliness of any trace amount of soy present in SunButter is very small, but there still is a chance of contamination because of the shared equipment.
Once the roasting is completed the sunflower is then processed (ground) into SunButter on our
equipment that ONLY processes sunflower seed. All of our processing facilities are completely
    Peanut and Tree‐nut free.
I hope this helps. Let us know how SunButter may fit your lifestyle--and what you think of it. Of course you can always contact us directly, too. I'm SunButterElizabeth@gmail.com
